Usually with little or no maintenance, locks tend to have a hard life. They are often neglected, sometimes literally for decades, until they fail! One of the most common problem with old locks (especially on outside doors) is stiffness caused by dirt and grime, and over time, disuse. Frequent use of locks is good for them and can keep parts moving.

A door out of square, due to swelling by damp or loose hinges causing dropping, can add extra pressure to a lock’s alignment. Sliding doors and windows can also be affected by misalignment, which in turn can affect the lock.

Test that your door fully opens and closes without catching
Ensure your locks are free from excessive load and unnecessary stress
Keep lock surfaces clean, make use of a graphite lubricant
Avoid abrasive cleaners or tools, strong solvents, and bore water
Have your locks regularly serviced by a qualified, professional locksmith
